Mount Maunganui's Baywave TECT Aquatic and Leisure Centre

Posted September 29, 2019

Tauranga, in the Bay of Plenty, is famous for many things; the most sunshine hours, beautiful beaches,  6th most populated NZ city, stunning harbour views, Mount Maunganui,  geographical proximity to Auckland, Hamilton and Rotorua, home to Hairy Maclary and owners of the biggest Wave pool in New Zealand to name a few.

Tauranga's rapidly growing population and noted water-borne adventure status, combined with Tauranga City Council's goal to provide more fun activities and services for recreational swimmers in the city, has resulted in the collaborative development of a new Pirate themed play structure for Mount Maunganui's Baywave TECT Aquatic and Leisure Centre.

With more than 230,000 visitors to the Mount Maunganui's Baywave TECT Aquatic and Leisure Centre a year, supported by a 25m lap pool,  a leisure pool, the biggest wave pool in New Zealand, a thistle themed hydroslide,  bombing platform, a spa pool, steam and sauna facilities. CAL's Auckland based team and Polin Waterparks were given the challenge to design,  a themed play structure with a Wow factor that compliments the existing aquatic facilities, challenges and entertains young bathers, and provides hours of fun and family enjoyment for many years to come!

Fortunately, this is a "walk in the water park" for Polin Waterparks, who have designed a unique, interactive play structure that is both challenging and safe for young swimmers and families supporting the pirate adventurer through the new Baywave water play experience.

Construction of the new Pirate Play structure began mid-2019 in conjunction with the Mount Maunganui's Baywave TECT Aquatic and Leisure Centre upgrade programme.
